Since I've been getting requests to archive GIF files lately, I thought I'd codify some policy regarding the rec.moto.photo archive. This thing started out as a way to increase the distribution of the DoD photo album. As such, I scanned in over a hundred pictures in color and made them available via FTP and mail server. This established in my mind a certain subject matter and level of quality that I'd like to maintain. Specifically, the picture content should be of rec.motorcycle readers, their motorcycles and their activities. The pictures should be 256 color GIF around 600x400 (which comes out to be about 100KB per picture). Some things I'd rather not see: * Multiple pictures of the same subject * Grayscale pictures * Magazine pictures or any other copyright work * Pictures that come out postage stamp size on a workstation * GIFs over about 150KB - I will cut down size or resolution to fit * Fuzzy or out of focus pictures * People who aren't involved with rec.moto and motorcycles that aren't owned by rec.moto readers * Pictures in poor taste This is not meant as a slam on any pictures offered, any scanner, software, computer system or rec.motorcycles reader. It's just that I really dislike saying 'no' to GIFs offered to the archive. If you already have a picture in some machine-readable format (GIF or JPEG preferred), you can FTP it to Cerritos.edu account 'anonymous' password 'incoming', binary mode and notify me by mail or mail it uuencoded to tanner@cerritos.edu. Please include a one or two line description for inclusion in AAAREADME.TXT.
